Who is invited: Boys in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade; along with their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, etc. (a male adult over the age of 18 that is an important part of your child’s life.  Your child can attend without an adult- but must be picked up on time!

When will we meet: Every other Monday from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Meetings for the 2016-2017 School Year: September 26, October 10, October 24, November 7, November 21, December 5, December 19, January 9, January 30, February 13, February 27, March 13, March 27, April 10, May 1

What is the club: This is a chance for boys at our school to read and talk about books with male adults and role models.  Boys can see how men use reading in their lives and why reading isn't just “a girl thing.”  Boys can also look at some books that are written just for guys.

Something to work for:

If boys attend 3 meetings, they are given a Marvelous Mustangs t-shirt!

Reading a variety of genres: The boys book club has a bulletin board outside of the library.  On this bulletin board, boys work to earn pokemon for the display.  Each pokemon represents a certain genre.  So if a boy reads a drama book he gets a charmander by his name. Each pokemon evolves when a boy reads 3 and 5 books in that genre.  So by reading three drama books, the boy gets charmeleon by his name, and for 5 drama books charizard is added.  The boys are excited to earn pokemon, but most importantly, they are being exposed to a variety of types of books.  They are also using Accelerated Reader to prove they have read a book and thus earn the pokemon.

Why is this club important?

-Statistically, boys earn 70 percent of Ds and Fs and fewer than half of the As.

-80 percent of high school dropouts are male.

-Children who do not read proficiently by the end of the fourth grade remain poor readers through high school and are less likely to graduate.

Let's work together to get boys interested in reading - before it is too late!
