What We're Learning in First Grade

Skills: Some of the things that first grade classes are learning about this month in math include place value (tens/ones), coin identification and trading pennies for dimes, comparing and ordering numbers, finding numbers that are ten more and ten less than a specific number, and solving story problems.  In shared reading we continue to work on retelling and summarizing.  We will focus on rules for discussion and on figuring out things the author has not directly told us (using inferences). In writing we will continue to write small moment stories about things we have done and will write persuasive papers that include supporting statements.  We will also work on content or factual writing about things that we have been studing.  In science, students will be learning about forces of motion, weight, and magnets.

Fact Frogs: Our "ponds" continue to grow as our students memorize their basic addition and subtraction facts.  The students get so excited each time they pass a timed test and move to the next stage in becoming a frog.  If you haven't already, please purchase an inexpensive set of flashcards and begin practicing addition and subtraction facts with your child for a few minutes each night.

Sight Words by the Sea: Our beach is all set up and we have lots of flip flops and crabs up to represent our students who have mastered the first two rows on the first grade list.  Continue to practice these words for a few minutes each night so they will have them mastered before second grade.  This will also help them to "get on the bus" and read at our grade level goal of F for this six weeks.

Coats, Please:  Please be sure to send a coat with your child each day.  It is sometimes very chilly during our playtime.

Attendance: Please be sure your child is at school on time each day so they will not miss valuable instruction.  Intervention starts at 8:00 AM.
