ESL - English as a Second Language
The English as a Second Language program in Asheboro City Schools uses the Rigby “On Our Way to English” series from Harcourt. This program teaches reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills at all elementary grade levels. The program uses books, posters, and hands-on science activities to integrate content and language skills.
Students who are enrolled in the ESL program come from several language backgrounds; however, the majority of students are Spanish speakers. Students are assessed annually, in February, and are expected to show growth in each of the four areas of focus. Students are classified by their level of language proficiency. There are three levels of service for ESL students: “current” students are pulled into the ESL classrooms where they receive daily language instruction using the Rigby program; “consultative” students are students who remain in the regular classroom, but who may return to current status if the need arises; “monitored” students are those students who have met all requirements for exiting ESL services. Students are monitored for two years to ensure their success in mainstream classes. Students are expected to fully exit ESL services after an average of 5 years.
The Multicultural Festival is an activity that the ESL department sponsors each year. The festival typically takes place near the end of May and is a school-wide event that lets students experience crafts, music, games, and other activities from cultures around the world. This year’s festival featured 17 stations such as Henna tattoos from India, Hawaiian leis, Russian nesting dolls, and Japanese origami and fish art. The Grand Finale featured 5th graders performing in a Talent Show at the end of the day. For students and staff members alike, the festival is a unique experience of fun and learning and the ESL department is proud to be the sponsor.
